SSETA Accredited Qualification for CSSD Decontamination course

Exciting new opportunities currently available for participants with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in CSSD.

This course will enable the participants to work or supervise a Modern CSSD. 

Subjects will include:

  • Infection Control Concept. 
  • CSSD design.
  • Work Routine.
  • Equipment.
  • Management. 

Course Venue: Combination of Medhold Training Academy, which has a full functional CSSD, & hospital practical at the workplace.

The course focus on:

  • Classroom- theoretical and practical
  • Hands on training
  • Infection control and management concept discussions.
  • Theories and latest development.
  • Hospital practical at the workplace.

The training course will recognise the competence and knowledge of the employee in the area of decontamination. This may benefit candidates seeking promotion or other employment opportunities. The training programme is based on European and International Standards and Guidelines, but may also be adapted to different National Standards and Guidelines . After successful completion of the training course the candidate will receive a Certificate and or Diploma.

Course Criteria

The Foundation Course in Sterilization and Decontamination is a one day workshop prerequisite towards the Basic Module in Sterilization and Decontamination.

This is a brief orientation to all aspects of the SSD.
Any course that teaches the fundamentals of SSD will be accepted towards entering this module. Once successfully completing the Foundation Module, with proof of competence, students with a minimum two years’ experience in an SSD will be eligible to progress to the Sterilization and Decontamination Course. The Foundation Module will be mandatory for students with no or limited experience in CSSD, subject to student evaluation. Students must have attended and passed an approved foundation course, as proof of a basic level of competence. 

Special Requirements

Each student will need to have a senior member of staff appointed as a mentor/ supervisor to assist with site evaluation and completion of a practical experience logbook over 5 / 8weeks. It is highly recommended that senior staff attend the course first so that they can train and assist more junior staff. Costs cover all course study material, practical work and Certification of Competence. Complete lay out of the course will be given with training pack.

Basic Course

8 week course which commences with 2 days of attendance at Medhold Training Academy for relevant training. The course provides a basic understanding of practice and procedure to all levels of SSD workers. It serves as an introduction to Sterile Services and clarifies misconceptions in the workplace.

Examination

Students will be examined with a written test, completion of a log book at the workplace and a project relating to the subject. A Certificate of Competence will be issued to students who pass the examination and demonstrate competency. No Certificate of Attendance will be provided.

    Intermediate Course

    Students must have successfully completed the Basic Module in Sterilization and Decontamination to be eligible for this course. The Intermediate Module is a 10 week course which commences with 3 days attendance at Medhold Training Academy for relevant training. It is a higher level education for CSSD staff  who have either successfully completed the basic course or have the relevant certification. It includes decontamination of heat labile equipment and principles of sterilization. There is a significant component of practical demonstration and activity.

    Examination

    Students will be examined by a written test, completion of a log book at the workplace and a project relating to the subject. A Certificate of Competence will be issued to students who pass the examination and demonstrate competency.

    No Certificate of Attendance will be given.

      Note: Students must have successfully completed both the Sterilization and Decontamination Basic and Intermediate courses with top marks in order to be eligible for this course.

      Advanced Course in Sterile Service Management

      The Advanced Module is a 10 week course which commences with 2 days of attendance at Medhold Training Academy for relevant training. It will provide in depth understanding of equipment, standards, packaging, wrapping and legal aspects of sterilization and decontamination. In addition, management of Sterile Services and technical training for sterilization technologists will be addressed. Those attending this module will require a high level of understanding and commitment. 

      Additional commitment and assignments will be required to be done. Participants who complete the Advance Course in Sterile Service Management will be eligible to attend the Advanced/Supervisor Course which consists of 1 additional day of contact training at Medhold Training Academy (see Advanced/Supervisor Course).

      Examination

      Students will be examined by a written test, completion of a log book at the workplace and additional assignments. A Certificate of Competence will be issued to students who pass the examination and demonstrate competency. No Certificate of Attendance will be given.

        Advanced/Supervisor Course

        This will require 1 additional day of contact training at Medhold Training Academy. On completion of the Advanced/Supervisor Course students will be encouraged to complete all the SAQA UNIT STANDARD research and project development which will result in a higher qualification in SSD accredited SSETA/SAQW National Certificate.

        Examination

        Students will be examined by a written test, completion of a log book at the workplace and additional assignments. A Certificate of Competence will be issued to students who pass the examination and demonstrate competency. No Certificate of Attendance will be given.
